This group provides a safe, therapeutic and empathic environment, which presents opportunity for children living in homeless shelters to identify and express their feelings and thoughts. The Kid Builders Group was developed to foster resiliency and coping strategies in children who had experienced chronic adversity and stress. It focuses on the core of resilience: hope. Hopefulness may be defined as having positive expectations for the future and as a feeling of confidence that difficult odds can be overcome. The group members are assisted in expanding their repertoire of hope-producing strategies and ways of coping with difficult circumstances. They are also encouraged to reflect on how they might help others to feel more hopeful.
